You Don't Need A Morning Routine
I hate waking up to an alarm.
I don't know why. Something deep inside me wants to rebel at obeying the incessant ringing of an alarm.
Whenever I don't have to get up at a certain time, it's bliss. I wake up fresh and ready to go.
Morning routines are not for me. You've probably seen the various articles everywhere on the interwebs about every man and his dog's morning routine.
They wake up at 5 am, meditate for 15 minutes, exercise, take a cold shower and complete a whole host of other activities before us mere mortals have even opened our eyelids.
Every single day they follow the same routine. You might think this is fantastic. You might like the structure a regimented morning gives you.
But do you need to do all this? Is it necessary to optimise your morning to the nth degree? I'm sceptical.
You don't need a regimented routine, all you need are options. Give yourself options when you wake up and take it from there.
The option to read a book, the option to meditate. Your success isn't determined by whether you follow a routine or not. Mix things up once in a while. We crave spontaneity as well as routine.
It's easy to forget you're human, not a machine. We're imperfect creatures trying to lead perfect lives. Of course, we'll slip up once in a while.
By giving yourself the creative freedom to organise your morning as you see fit, you won't feel guilty when you can't live up to your expectations of yourself.
Take another look at your morning routine. You don't need it as much as you think you do.
