The Monday Mix (27/03/2023)
Hi friends,
Not much to report this week as it’s been a quiet one, so I’ll get straight into what I want to share. I’ll aim to send out my reading list for March sometime this week too.
Wavewalker
It’s amazing the stories you come across that are out of this world crazy, yet have never heard about until you read about them. This article is a fantastic example. It’s about a woman, whose parents decided to take her and her brother on a round-the-world sailing trip when she was seven. It’s such an incredible story, and I mean that in the negative sense of the word, I’m amazed it’s not been turned into a movie. What these children had to go through because their parents decided to embark on this trip is insane. I can’t say I enjoyed reading this article but it was hard to stop reading, such was the craziness of the story.
Bucket List Experiences at Risk from Climate Change
An interesting list of places or experiences that might soon be at risk because of climate change. Despite doing a lot of travelling myself, there are a lot of places on this list I’ve not been to, and might not make it to if climate change is as bad as feared. The breadth of places shows that climate change affects almost everyone and makes the lack of action on it all the more bonkers.
The $55 Million Writer No One Has Heard Of
This is a strange article. Strange in the sense that writer really doesn’t seem to like the subject they’re writing. That subject is Brandon Sanderson, an author who has made over $55 million from his books. I had never heard of him before reading this article and I doubt many of you will either. This article is a great read because the writer does a great job of making her disdain for Sanderson obvious. This made me feel sympathetic with Sanderson and warm to him while reading the piece, even if he does seem to be unremarkable apart from his ability to write stories people want to read.
Book I’m reading - The Age of The Strongman by Gideon Rachman
An overview of the phenomenon of ‘strongman’ leaders that have emerged in the last decade or so. It’s an interesting read, especially if you’re interested in politics. One thing that’s interesting is that the book is exclusively about men, there are no women. Considering that Merkel, Ardern and Sturgeon have willingly stepped down as leaders of their countries in the last few years suggests why this is an all-male list.
Quote I’m pondering: – "We must never forget that art is not a form of propaganda; it is a form of truth." – John F. Kennedy
That’s all for this week.
Until next time,
Tom
