The Monday Mix (24/05/2021)
Hey friends,
Another Monday means another Monday Mix!
This week I’ve published two new posts on Medium. The first one looks at the environmental impact of Bitcoin and how it’s affecting the planet. The outlook isn’t good and presents a problem if we want to prevent climate change from running amok.
The second one looks at tips to help you become more creative and develop more ideas. If you’re a writer or involved in any creative pursuit this is one worth reading. Click the links below to read either, or both of them.
Elon Musk Is Right, Bitcoin Is Terrible for the Environment
5 Creative Tips To Help You Become An Idea Machine
Here’s what I want to share with you this week
The Martian
This isn’t an article about Matt Damon and his role in the eponymous movie, rather this a look at Elon Musk, who is without question one of, if not the most influential person on the planet right now. Muk has a lot of haters and fans, but this article is a good look at his pursuits and exploits on Twitter and what they say about us and him.
Effective Altruism
A friend of mine introduced to me this concept the other month and it’s an intriguing one. Donating to charity is commonplace. One of the most common recipients of money are cancer charities. Primarily because most of us have a close one who has been affected by this awful disease. But is it the best allocation of resources? Are there other causes we could donate to which reduce more suffering per dollar? Effective Altruism suggests there is. This introduction is a useful guide to the concept and might change your views on which charities you donate to.
A Jewish Case For Palestinian Refugee Return
The crisis between Israel and Palestine has been raging on for a couple of weeks now. This is the extension of conflict which has been fought since the British mandate of Palestine ended in 1948. One with no end in sight. This article is the best one I’ve read recently in terms of framing the genesis of the conflict. I didn’t know the ins and out of how it all started and this article does a great job of filling in those gaps. It’s well worth a read and will make you reconsider this conflict from a historical perspective.
Why Cryptocurrency Is a Giant Fraud
I’ve been reading more and more on this topic and this is one of the most intriguing articles I’ve come across. If you’re invested in crypto you might not agree, but the points raised inside are interesting and certainly have weight. Whether is a fraud, and the printing of Tether on demand is one suggestion it might be, it’s a thought-provoking look at a developing industry.
Book I’m reading - The Barcelona Legacy
Another book on football and a look at how one club has influenced modern football more than any other. This is written by the great Jonathan Wilson, and if you’re a football fan I urge you to read it.
Quote I’m pondering - “All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
That’s it for this email, I’ll send out my reading list later in the week and maybe one or two other things as well. For now, take care and enjoy the rest of your week!
