The Monday Mix (12/12/2022)
Hi friends,
Not much to report this week so I’ll get straight into what I want to share.
Fusion Power
Fascinating news that an experimental nuclear fusion reactor has produced a net energy gain. Nuclear fusion is the process which powers the sun and produces an abundance of energy without nuclear waste or emissions. It’s no exaggeration to say if we could make fusion power mainstream, it would be one of the biggest scientific breakthroughs of all time.
The joke with fusion power is that it’s always 20 years away, such has been the struggle to perfect it. While it’s best to be cautious with the results, this could be the start of a big breakthrough that offers clean energy at scale. Given the war in Ukraine has turned into an energy crisis for the whole of Europe, this cannot come a moment too soon.
Liz Truss’s Mad 44 Days in Office
Just typing that headline is insane and looking at it now it feels like a lifetime ago when Truss was PM. If you’re not British, then this whole psychodrama must have seemed bizarre from abroad. It was just as bizarre to live through, but no less devastating for the damage her government managed to wreak in just 44 days!
This is a detailed, and frankly bonkers account at times, of her whirlwind time in office. The UK has been a lot of things since 2016, but one of them is not boring. I think that’s what we’d all like it to be for a bit now, very boring and without lunatics running the show!
Mission Jurassic
As I love dinosaurs and have a somewhat childlike fascination with them, this was an amazing article to read. Honestly, I’m not sure there’s a better job in the world than hunting for dinosaur bones. I’ve worked in some great jobs in my time, landscape gardening was a lot of fun but I think digging up 150 million-year-old dino bones would top the lot!
Book I’m reading - The Age of Football by David Goldblatt
Man, this book is big! Just about finished this one now. If you like football, buy it, you’ll love it. If not, I’d give it a pass.
Quote I’m pondering: – “To keep your balance, you must keep moving.’ – Albert Einstein
That’s all for this week.
Until next time,
Tom
