The Monday Mix (03/07/2023)
Hi friends,
Once again, I’m late in sending this out so I’ll get straight into it this week.
Maverick Rewilders
Fascinating article about a group of people who are taking it upon themselves to reintroduce animals into habitats in which they once existed. Some of the statistics in this piece are alarming and show how much biodiversity loss there has been in the past 50 years. Rewilding is part of the answer but governments across the globe have to take the issues seriously and fund them accordingly. As noble as the efforts mentioned in this article are, by themselves, they won’t be enough.
Saturn’s Hidden Moons
A really cool article about how we’re still discovering moons around planets. I had no idea that 62 new moons had been discovered around Saturn. It does boggle the mind how they haven’t been spotted before. One of the main reasons is that a lot of moons don’t follow traditional orbits around planets, which is what stopped some of these moons from being spotted. It’s amazing that we’re still learning so much about the solar system despite the hundreds of years telescopes have been pointing towards the sky.
100 Most Significant Political Films
This list does exactly what it says; lists 100 films significant for the politics they depict. There are a lot of films you’d expect on here, some you might not, and others you might not have heard of. If you’re looking for some films to watch in the coming weeks, this is a good list to browse for some ideas.
Music
Rediscovered this 90s gem the other week. There’s nothing like music to inspire nostalgia. This might also be the best example of a song sung in a strong Welsh accent! Just brilliant!
Book I’m reading - In Defense of Civilization by Michael R.J. Bonner
An interesting book about the history of civilization and how we can renew it. The best thing about this book is how erudite Bonner is. He knows a lot of history and introduces figures I’ve never heard of before. His ideas are interesting too. It’s a short book but one that packs a lot of punch.
Quote I’m pondering: – “It isn't what we say or think that defines us, but what we do.” – Jane Austen
That’s all for this week.
Until next time,
Tom
